The restoration of Il Mulino (“the Mill”) in 2008 transformed a former flour mill into a spacious and comfortable home for seven or ten people. During the restoration, care was taken to incorporate some of the original features of the mill into the main house and the grounds, including two long stone walls which previously were used to channel a nearby stream towards the mill. Today these two walls form a natural enclosure for the property’s swimming pool.
The mill is a building that evolved gradually over time, acquiring additions and extensions as the years passed. The result is a comfortable property with plenty of nooks and crannies that give a charming and rustic feel. The house has been decorated very tastefully, and there are interesting interior decoration touches in the fabrics and furniture. There is a large lawn ideal for children to play outdoors, and many other outside spaces for relaxing.
The capacity of Il Mulino is 10 people. The main portion of the house sleeps seven people in four bedrooms with four bathrooms. There is a separate suite on the second floor of the house, reached by a covered outside passageway, which sleeps 3 people in two bedrooms with one shared bathroom. This suite can be closed off if a group of 7 people rents the property. The suite is never rented separately.
Guests at Il Mulino enter into a comfortably furnished living room/dining room with a large fireplace at one end. The original arches have been retained, giving the room a refined, rustic feel. French doors lead from the dining area out to a vine-covered terrace, which is ideal for dining “al fresco.” There is a fully equipped kitchen with a marble-top table that can be used for informal breakfasts, with an adjacent storeroom. A single room with a bathroom (shower) is also on this floor with a separate entrance from the front of the house.
Stairs from the living room area lead to the upper floors of the house. On the second floor there is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, each with an ensuite bathroom (one with a bathtub, the other with a shower). Another flight of stairs reaches the Tower room, a twin bedroom with an ensuite bathroom (bathtub). The suite with a double or twin bedroom, a single bedroom and a bathroom (bathtub and hand shower) can be reached via an outdoor passage on the second floor or a separate outside staircase.
Il Mulino is on an agricultural estate of more than 1200 acres, and farming is carried out using organic methods. On the estate, the local native breed of cattle, Chianina, are raised. Over 200 acres of the farm are devoted to the production of sunflowers, olive oil and wine. There are many walking trails throughout the estate that are open to guests, with the landscape varying from forests, olive groves, vineyards, and pastures with grazing cattle.
Il Mulino is equipped with a telephone, high speed internet connection, dishwasher, washing machine, large refrigerator and freezer, toaster, juicer, microwave, iron and ironing board, filter coffee machine, CD-stereo, satellite TV with DVD player, 2 hair dryers, fans in all bedrooms except the ground floor single, screens on all bedroom windows, crib, high chair and central heating.
Maid service is provided three hours a day, five times per week (Monday through Friday). The housekeeper is also available to prepare meals upon request based on the local Tuscan cuisine. An English-speaking caretaker is also available when needed.
The closest place for shopping—5 kilometers away—is the medieval village of Lucignano, which sits on a hill and is known for the elliptical walls that surround it. There are grocery stores, cafes, newsstands, banks and trattorias. There are tennis courts in Lucignano, and mountain bikes can be hired there. Other surrounding villages include Monte San Savino, Foiano and Sinalunga. There are numerous restaurants within a short drive of the property.
Il Mulino is particularly well located for touring Tuscany, as the towns of Arezzo, Montepulciano, Piensa, Cortona and Siena are all within one hour. Florence is about ninety minutes away by car. The closest train station is Arezzo, on the main line from Florence to Rome. The trip to Florence takes a little over one hour.
